Day 62

Rothenburg! Rothenburg is located in southern Germany. Dad, said it was one of the best towns that he saw on the trip! I agree, it was one of my favorites too. It is one of the few (or maybe the only) old towns in Germany that was not damaged or destroyed in WWII. The people who built the town had very good imaginations, like Anne of Green Gables because she was good at imagining things. The houses are all different colors, green, blue, yellow, red, white, and pink. Around the city is a wall that you can walk on top of, not all the way around, but a lot. The path on top of the wall had a roof over head and is very nicely kept. For our visit to the town it was a cold kind of day, and so we liked to stop frequently and go into shops and see what was there, and get warm.

Here are the four season in Rothenburg

Winter & Spring (above)Summer & Fall (above)

One place that we spent a lot of time was, Anneliese Friese’s little Christmas shop. Rick Steves, our favorite travel enthusiast, is a good friend of hers and visits her every Christmas. In her shop there were cuckoo clocks, christmas cards, ornaments, watches, bracelets, baskets, garlands, figures (Landon got one), and many more little things. I just looked at clocks wishing I could buy one. Anneliese is in her 90s (?) and loves Harley Davidson motorcycles! She has riden all around the United States. She was riding her bike until just a couple years ago when she had a bad accident and after that her son would not let her ride anymore. She is a very nice lady, and because we said we loved watching Rick Steves’ videos she gave us a discount on what Landon and Mom bought. Mom bought a couple little christmas tree ornaments.

The red point is where Annaliese’s shop is located.

If you are hoping to visit this town:

There are several “Rothenburgs” in Germany. Make sure you are going to Rothenburg ob der Tauber (on the Tauber River); people really do sometimes drive or ride the train to other, nondescript Rothenburgs by accident. —Rick Steves

For a snack in Rothenburg we tried snowballs. It consists of dough strips that are all smashed together into a ball and baked. They have so many different kinds of snowballs. They have ones with chocolate, cinnamon, plain white sugar, many different kinds of nuts, caramel, powdered sugar, and much, much more! But they are kinda expensive so we went with plain white sugar and powdered sugar. They are not the most exciting thing, unless you like eating plain cookies or piecrust cookies.

One thing that Dad was looking for was a BIG pretzel because Rick Steves got one in Rothenburg. We looked in every bakery there that we could find. But that was fun actually, exciting to see what was inside. We did get pretzels, but we opted for the small ones.

After spending a good many hours in Rothenburg we headed back to our car parked outside the town wall and set out to find our next home. It was 2 hours away from where we were staying. After an exciting day we were ready to eat dinner and go to bed when we found our new home.
